'Photo Evangelist' Cherie Hiser Gone At 79

I met Cherie Hiser on April 1 of 1984 when she came to the Grand Opening of the Photographic Image Gallery.  Although we shared many memories and she influenced me in a myriad of ways, I can only lay privilege to be one of the many creative lives  she touched.

I could say that I was Cherie's best friend, but it is a claim that many hundreds of others could rightfully make; that is how she made you feel.  Cherie could drive you to the heights of creativity and to the depths of despair, and when you met her you soon knew you were at the beginning of an epic ride.

Hiser was an evangelist, and her flock was vast.   It made no difference if you were Dennis Hopper, Ansel Adams, Minor White, a soiled dove or citizen of the street, she reached her spirit out to everyone who crossed her path.  In all those years I never heard her denigrate another soul.

Cherie was a life force that called for no quarter, the world was her congregation.  For those who knew her there was always the smiling shake of their head at her every story of adventure and every quest that sparked her inner light.  They followed her anyway.

Cherie was never one to discourage an idea or a dream, and she had the ability to light that spark in every soul who crossed her path.

I am told that friends are planning a celebration of Hiser’s life in May.  I will send out that information when I get more details.
